These groups are becoming more and more efficient as true experts in the field, researchers, professionals, and other students can all meet together in a chat room. Students can access much more relevant information through these discussions in their PLE and will learn so much more. Education is becoming more and more informal unlike the past, and students will begin engaging in more and more habits of a lifelong learner.

The authors raised questions that need to be addressed as a result of the changes that technology continues to create. Learning and education in general no longer has distance or time constraints. Students can access the information, meet and discuss with experts or research at any time during the day across the globe. The concept of connectivism is a core skill as students need to be able to see connections between fields, ideas and concepts. Education is becoming more self-directed and self-regulated.

I found Adventure Learning as very interesting, but I was not surprised at its success. Adventure Learning is where students engage in an adventure like GoNorth!

I was intrigued and am now pondering how I could do something like this at the high school level. I find this having many similarities with games in the classroom or virtual field trips. We all know that the advertisers and such keep track of our comings and goings on the web. When we search for an item, it seems we then become drenched in ads focusing on that item, so it makes sense that we should keep track of where students go, how they access the information and then what they do with it to make the learning much more optimal.

He has authored one book, but also has contributed to three open-access books for college students. His goal is to improve teaching and learning of distance education. For example, there was a case study where Chinese university students were paired with American college students to learn English using distance learning. Chinese educators wanted to seek out emerging technologies that would enhance learning and instruction in a more relevant way.

The Chinese students had an avatar which was a 3D representation of them. After the first three chapters, it was confusing at times trying to figure out who you were reading. However, one thing that stood out to me was that Veletsianos commented that teachers roles should be that of an online facilitator and guide to students and not a lecturer. Due to how students access information for learning, entertainment, interests, hobbies, and self-help, we as educators should help students discern that information to see if it will be useful.

Even though the author places a high importance on distance education, he also realizes that to make it work students need to feel part of a community. Students who are in distance education have the highest risk of dropping out of their program due to their feeling of isolation Veletsianos Staring at a computer and not having meaningful interaction with other students of similar interest can be hard.

The author George Veletsianos is an innovator. The research that he has done aims to understand and improve teaching and learning in emerging digital environments.
